Day
Day
Begin with pickup at your Cairo hotel, then travel to Wadi El Natrun, a roughly 2-hour trip through desert scenery. Once home to approximately 60 Coptic compounds, just a few of Wadi El Natrun’s historic monasteries remain, and the area has been added to UNESCO's list of tentative World Heritage sites.
Make the first stop of the day at Deir al Baramus, the oldest of the surviving monasteries: pass through the fortified exterior wall built to protect the monks against desert raids, and explore the interior, which includes churches, chapels, and a baptistery, as well as refectories and a keep.
Continue to Deir Anba Bishoi—the monastery takes its name from Saint Pishoy, who founded it in the 4th century—where five churches are protected by a 5th century keep. The final stop of the day is at Deir el Suryani, the smallest of the three monasteries. This monastery is used by Syriac monks, and is the home of several important Coptic relics, including the body of Saint Pishoy.
After visiting the three monasteries, you'll have the option to stop for lunch (own expense) before making the return trip to Cairo, where this tour concludes with drop-off at your hotel.

We joined this tour out of curiosity and left feeling spiritually recharged . Wadi El Natroun is such a hidden gem — not flashy , not touristy , just quiet desert and soulful history . The monasteries felt like sacred islands in a sea of sand . I especially loved how the guide explained the daily lives of the monks , how they live so simply yet so richly . It was peaceful , thought – provoking , and very different from anything else we did in Egypt .

This wasn’t just a church tour — it was an adventure ! We left Cairo early and cruised through the desert in a super comfy coach . The guide gave us cool facts about each monastery — like how Deir al – Baramus was built over ancient Roman ruins . Didn’t expect that ! Also , the silence in those places was next level — you could hear your own heartbeat . Very humbling . The group was small , which made everything more intimate and easygoing . We got back to Cairo just before sunset . A perfect day .

Our visit to Wadi El Natroun was a calm and enriching experience . I didn’t realize Egypt had such a strong Christian heritage — it added a whole new layer to what I thought I knew about the country . The monasteries are simple but beautiful , with incredible artwork and ancient manuscripts tucked inside . The guide shared powerful stories about the monks who lived there . Also , the transportation was sleek and well – air conditioned — a big plus when you’re crossing the desert ☀️ .

This trip gave me chills — in a good way . Being in a place where Christian monasticism started is just surreal . I learned about the Desert Fathers in Sunday school , but seeing their world in person was something else . The guide made it all feel very personal , like we were part of the story . Also , the van had USB ports , which was a small but helpful surprise 🔌 . If you’re looking for a day that’s calm , spiritual , and far from the crowds , this one hits the mark .

Just one hour outside Cairo , and it’s like stepping into another world . Wadi El Natroun is full of dusty charm and peaceful silence . Our group visited four monasteries , each more photogenic than the last 📷 . The monks were welcoming , and the architecture was breathtaking in its ancient , solid way . I loved the little garden in Anba Bishoy — such a peaceful spot to reflect . Our transportation was prompt and comfortable , and the tour was paced just right so we never felt rushed or bored .

Me and my wife loved how this tour was off the beaten path . It wasn’t crowded at all , which made it feel very personal . The desert road to Wadi El Natroun was peaceful , and the monasteries were humble yet powerful in their simplicity . The highlight for me was seeing the hand – copied manuscripts in Deir al – Surian — seriously mind – blowing stuff 📜 . I didn’t expect to enjoy it this much , but now I’m glad we picked this tour instead of something more touristy .

As a history nerd and Sunday school teacher , this tour was everything I hoped for and more . We traveled in a clean modern van with great air conditioning — a blessing in the desert . The monasteries were serene , especially the Anba Bishoy Monastery with its iconic church dome and ancient icons . You could feel centuries of faith in the stones . The guide gave context to everything , including how monasticism started here before spreading around the world . It made me see Egypt in a whole new light — not just pyramids and pharaohs , but deep spiritual heritage .

Who knew monks in the desert could be this interesting ? I joined this tour thinking I’d just check off a few historical sites , but wow — I got so much more . The monasteries of Wadi El Natroun are seriously impressive , especially when you realize how old they are and how much they’ve endured . One of the monks even greeted us with a smile and waved as we passed . The guide didn’t rush us at all , which I appreciated because I take forever with photos 😅 . The whole day was relaxed , warm ( literally ) , and surprisingly touching .

We never imagined a day tour from Cairo could be so tranquil yet full of historical wonders . The visit to Wadi El Natroun was both eye – opening and heartwarming . The monasteries , especially Deir al – Surian , felt alive with centuries of prayers and devotion . It wasn’t just a sightseeing trip — it was a peaceful retreat into Egypt’s lesser – known spiritual side . Our guide was kind , clear , and answered every single question we threw at him . The desert drive was a breeze with the modern coach , and the cool water bottles they gave us were a nice touch .
