Explore Coptic Cairo: A Journey to the Abu Serga Church

Discover the spiritual heart of Old Cairo, an area known as Christian Coptic Cairo. This historic district holds deep significance, believed to be a sanctuary for the Holy Family during their flight to Egypt. According to tradition, they sought refuge in a cave, a sacred spot where the Abu Serga Church Old Cairo (Church of St. Sergius) was later built. Stepping inside this ancient church is like walking through a living history book, with its stunning architecture and rich spiritual heritage.

A visit to this area is a truly immersive experience. You’ll not only explore the Abu Serga Church Old Cairo but also other remarkable landmarks. Just nearby, you can admire the Hanging Church (Church of the Virgin Mary), so named for its position suspended over the Roman fortress of Babylon. Furthermore, your tour will include the Church of St. Barbara and the Coptic Museum, which houses an incredible collection of Christian art and artifacts. Another highlight is the Ben Ezra Synagogue, a testament to the diverse cultural tapestry of this unique neighborhood.

From Coptic to Islamic Cairo

After exploring the Christian quarter, we will journey into the captivating world of Islamic Cairo. Founded in 641 AD by Amr ibn Elas, this part of the city is a treasure trove of architectural wonders. We’ll begin by visiting his historic mosque, a foundational structure of the city. Later, you’ll be able to see the magnificent Sultan Hassan Mosque, also known as “Madrasa El Sultan Hassan.” This impressive building, built in 1356 AD, stands as a symbol of Mamluk power and artistry.

Continuing on, our tour will take you to the Al-Rifa’i Mosque, located directly across from the Sultan Hassan Mosque. Dating back to 1361, this mosque is a stunning example of late Mamluk architecture. It serves as the final resting place for members of Egypt’s royal family and the last Shah of Iran, Reza Pahlavi.
